To continue the embankment work on the main line, Network Rail propose to send their Heavy Goods Vehicles through Langport town centre. This will have a considerable impact over an estimated four-week period beginning next week.

The lorry movements as described by Network Rail are large and frequent: two lorries undertaking three trips per hour, assuming an eight-hour working day, Bow Bridge, Bow Street, Cheapside and North Street would expect to see forty-eight HGV movements per day.

Langport Town Council has tasked Network Rail to re-route the trucks without success, and now the council is appealing to our MP to intervene.

Air pollution, dust, traffic chaos and potential damage to the structure of the bridge and roadways would always be a problem but throughout one of the biggest tourist months for the local economy it will be especially so.

“commercial traffic scraping through the hanging chapel and HGVs rattling down such a narrow street of listed buildings is appalling.”

“Complete object to lorries coming through Langport. I have notice a huge increase of the years, we don't need any more to compromise safety of everything else on the roads and pavement.”

“This is crazy! The congestion in the narrow streets will be massive not to mention the environmental damage. A different route needs to be found.”

“Awful news. The roads aren't designed to cater for this type of vehicle and there will be damage caused to the infrastructure because of this traffic.”

“Bow Street is like a motorway, busy, congested with few drivers obeying the speed limit. We need a by-pass or effective traffic calming measures”

“I don’t think it’s acceptable for lorry’s to come through our town up to 28 times a day this is very unacceptable behaviour really upsets me that they think they can do this well that is going to change please stop 🛑 the lorry’s coming through our lovely little town”

“Absolutely ludicrous, the town is nowhere big enough as it has already proven time and time again. This amount of lorries every day could cause untold damage. Is saving a bit of fuel worth it?”

“The lorries should use an alternative route. The streets and pavements are narrow. Its a busy little town and large lorries are already banned.”

“Whilst I understand the need for Network Rail to get access to their work site, they need to find an alternative route that doesn't involve the going through Langport itself. Bow Street is ancient and as such is very narrow and already struggles with the volume of traffic that uses it. If you combine HGV's with delivery lorries, buses and the usual cars, pedestrians and bikes - it will be utter chaos.”

“Our historic, Listed building shakes with every HGV that travels through town. This is hugely damaging for both the town and our historic buildings.
In addition, the lack of wide pavements mean that pedestrians are at risk as well.”

“I think the vehicles should be coming from the Taunton direction. Langport has a weight restriction for a good reason. The road us not wide enough and a 90° bend between North Street and Bow Street. The road in the Taunton direction has no such weight restrictions or pinch points!!!”

“The streets in Langport are far too narrow for HGVs which are likely to cause damage to listed buildings. It is not necessary for the lorries to come this way. Other routes avoiding the town are available.”

“Definitely should not allow lorry’s to travel through Langport. Streets are too narrow. Very dangerous walking along pavements, many close shaves with vehicles.”

“There's already too many overweight lorries, it's a 7.5t weight limit, come in from the other direction. Someone will get hurt.”
