Who is paying for Prince Andrew's settlement?

This petition you signed is making a difference!

Just a quick thank you for adding your name to the petition. It's been mentioned across the reporting of the Andrew story, and the question it asks is now shaping the debate.

The appeal we launched yesterday, to raise £5,000, has already raised more than half that target. You can check it out and (if you haven't already) donate at www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/monarchy.

There's also a great article in the Guardian, about why Britain would be better off without the monarchy. And Sky News has reported on the damage being done to the royals, which you can watch on YouTube.

Lots more to do, but we're making waves and this is increasingly looking like a difficult decade ahead for the monarchy.

Thank you!

The Republic Team

The British public have a right to know if we are paying for Prince Andrew's settlement with Virginia Giuffre. Are we paying to keep Andrew out of the courtroom?

Most of the money the Royal Family have comes from the taxpayer, and Prince Andrew has a limited income of his own. We pay the Queen £20m a year from the profits of the Duchy of Lancaster, a property portfolio owned
by the state. That's in addition to the official funding of the monarchy.

It is from these funds that we are now paying to bail Prince Andrew out of a court appearance and allowing him to avoid answering serious accusations.

So we are calling on the government to ensure that the settlement is not being funded by royal funds that ultimately come from the public purse.
